Biosphere Reserve
With an area of 714,557 hectares
(1,765,709 acres) covering parts
of the municipalities of Rocky Point,
Plutarco Elias Calles and San Luis
Río Colorado, this majestic
ecological reserve is considered
one of the most arid of the Northern
Hemisphere and consequently has
very unique characteristics. Approximately
three quarters of the area is covered
with shifting dunes and the rest
is the El Pinacate volcanic area.
Around this, a large number of minor
volcanic formations are distributed.
Among those that stand out are the
El Elegante, the Cerro Colorado
and the Mc. Dougal craters. Because
of the similarity that the area
has to the moon´s surface,
it has been used by NASA as a training
ground for trips to the moon. The
reserve offers, with prior arrangements
in the biological station, two camping
areas. Kilometer 52 of the Sonoyta-Peñasco
Highway. Tel. 01 (638) 384 9007.
